Akseli Gallen - Kallela (1865-1931)
Akseli Gallen - Kallela was a leading Finnish painter who was best known for his illustrations of the Kalevala, an epic Finnish poem. On leaving school, he attended drawing classes at the Finnish Art Society. In 1884, he moved to Paris to study at the Academie Julian. Ten years later he held a joint exhibition with Edvard Munch in Berlin. In his travels he loved to learn about the art of the country he was visiting, studying frescoes in Italy stained glass in London and native art in New Mexico. You can see some of Gallen- Kallela's paintings below.

Thomas Kinkade and his Christmas cottage painting.
You may have seen some of Thomas Kinkade's Christmas cottage paintings on decorations, snow globes, jigsaw puzzles, jewellery boxes and table centre pieces. He
was known as the painter of light. His style was seen as kitsch and sentimental but had popular appeal especially at Christmas time. A film starring Peter O' Toole was made about the creation
of the Christmas Cottage painting you can see above. You can watch Thomas Kinkade talking about the painting and the film below.

What present did Elton John give Rod Stewart one Christmas?
In his autobiography, Rod Stewart tells the story of the friendly rival between him and Elton John when exchanging presents at
Christmas, each one trying to outdo the other with an extravagant gift. Rod Stewart bought Elton a £600 pop up champagne fridge from Harrods. On handing it over, Elton produced his gift..... an
original Rembrandt painting! It now hangs on the wall in the bar of Rod's home in America.
A Funny Story
Who do you think painted this picture?
Believe it or not, this is a very bad painting by Picasso of his pet owl. He was sufficiently embarrassed to not do anything with it. Later on he would do many
better paintings of owls. The sketch was bought by the kind of American investor who had enough money to buy a Picasso but only a very bad one. It was eventually bequeathed to the Emily Mathis Art
Museum in Milwaukee.
It just shows you that even the greatest of artists can have a bad day with a painting!
