Let`s go to China!

This month we go to China where we visit the National Art Museum in Beijing. The museum has a wide variety of art works in its collection and we will take a virtual tour of an exhibition featuring oil paintings there. We can also see a collection of fine watercolour and ink paintings some using the traditional brush and ink technique of painting. There is an interesting video on traditional brush painting, showing you how to hold and move the brush as well as how to apply the ink and make brush strokes. Following that is a demo on painting a river village using this method.

How to use a Brush and Ink in Chinese Painting

Here is a very informative tutorial on how to hold the brush and make the highly detailed brush strokes when painting in the traditional way. This technique is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world and is often used by artists working for the royal court or in independent workshops. Ink and wash painting is more freehand and long ago was the an art practiced by gentlemen.

Painting a Chinese River Village using Brushwork

Landscape painting was regarded as the highest form of art and generally still is.  Mountains are painted using strong black lines, ink wash and sharp dotted brush strokes. Rivers and rolling hills are painted in softer, rubbed brush work. Here is a short video demonstrating this technique when painting a river village.

A painting by Winston Churchill's goes up for sale

The Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque by Winston Churchill

You may have seen this picture on the news recently. It was painted in oils by Winston Churchill and went for a staggering £7 million at auction in London. The painting had been previously owned by the actress and film maker, Angelina Jolie. A spokesman from Christie reported that this was Churchill's best work and was the only landscape he worked on during the war. After he finished the painting, Churchill gave it to the US President, Franklin Roosevelt.
