Artists Booked for Session 2019-2020

 All of the artists for the new session have now been now confirmed. As detailed below, we have tried to find artists with a variety of styles and subject matter. We’ve also brought back a couple of popular demonstrators from the past as well as two new faces.

Andrew Taylor - Built Environment in Acrylics

If you remember, Andrew is a teacher in Williamwood High School’s art department where we meet each week. His Still Life demonstration (seen left) was one of the most popular demos in recent years. As he was so informative, sharing many tips and giving great advice on art techniques, we decided to ask him to return to the club this September. Andrew will be painting a built environment in acrylics.

Lesley (neé Anderson) Smith 

Boats using Mixed Media

Lesley graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1988, specialising in drawing and painting. She says she has a real connection with the landscape and expresses this through bold brushwork and a rich sense of colour. Wherever possible, Lesley works directly from nature, capturing the ever changing elements unique to a Scottish landscape. Max Mc Kinnon - Landscape in Acrylics

Max was a finalist in the “Landscape Artist of the Year.” He is recognised for his impressionist landscapes and cityscapes. His unique interpretation of the Scottish landscape draws us in, letting us see its unique beauty. Max will paint a landscape for us using acrylics.

Lynn Howarth - Portrait in Pastels

Lynn is an award winning Scottish artist who came to our club four years ago when she demonstrated painting her dog, Oskar, using pastels. She is better known for her portraiture and her paintings are collected by international art collectors all over the world. Lesley has won many prizes for her art work. These are:

Pastel Guild of Europe Portrait and Landscape prize, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Lesley plans to do a portrait in pastels for us.

Our exhibition was very successful and we sold 17 paintings altogether. Thank you to everyone who helped to prepare the room and hang the paintings as well as those who gave up their time to man the exhibition over the weekend. Special thanks go to Glenda for organising the whole event.

Cheques will be sent out shortly to those members who sold.

Paintings

You may submit 2/3 paintings plus your small competition painting. Your third painting should have a number 3 on it as it will only be hung if there is room for it.

The hanging fee is £2 for each painting but the small competition painting has no charge.

Please do not attach your labels to the paintings as labels will be displayed on the wall instead.

 

Labels are being handed out at the club during the month of May.

 

 

Rota

Glenda will soon email you the rota for the exhibition. Please check your time slot. For those on the sales desk an information sheet will be on the sales desk. Anne is happy to answer any questions about the sales of paintings on Friday at the Coach House.

For health and safety, any sold paintings on the top rail can only be taken down on  Monday 27th so please reserve them with a red dot.

 

Small Competition Paintings

Suzanne will bring your small framed competition painting to the Coach House on Friday 24th May. Please give us your label for the small painting when you hand in your paintings. The small paintings will have their own display and will sell for £30 so please put this amount on the labe

 

Insurance

We have Public Liability insurance but this does not cover loss or damage to paintings so please make sure your paintings are secure. Over the last two years, we have purchased thicker wires and heavier hooks to make our hanging system even stronger.

Art Demonstration by Yvonne Taylor

The Yellow Chair in Acrylics using a Palette Knife

 

Yvonne graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1998 and subsequently won many prizes for her art work. She uses acrylic paint, palette knives, brushes and cloths as well as tools to scratch back into the wet paint. Her subjects are cityscapes, landscapes and interiors. For our demonstration Yvonne will paint a copy of her Yellow Chair painting.

It was suggested at the AGM last  October that we approach the art department in Williamwood and ask if any of the staff would be interested in doing a demonstration for us. Andrew Taylor responded and plans to paint a Still Life in oils. Andrew is a graduate of London College of Art as well as Glasgow School of Art.

 

Thursday 14th March 2019

Competition

You are invited, once again to take part in our annual, informal painting competition. This will take place on Thursday 14th March.

 

The canvas boards to be handed out are 8in x 8in are supplied by Robert Andrew and are free to members.There are a couple of 10in x 8in rectangular boards left over from last year for those members who prefer to work with these dimensions. We also have square watercolour boards for those who prefer to use watercolour. You are free to choose your own subject and medium but please do not sign your painting as the artist is anonymous. Please place your completed painting in the white envelope provided and bring it to the club on Thursday 14th March when all the paintings will be displayed and members will vote in a secret ballot.  Robert has once again agreed to frame these paintings in a white frame for a special rate of around £12 per painting. You will get the opportunity to sell your picture in a special display at our exhibition in the Coach House at Greenbank Gardens at the end of May.

Lesley Banks is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art and has won many awards for her work. A few years ago, as artist in residence at Edinburgh Zoo she held her own exhibition called ‘ Urban Zoo’. In 2016, Lesley was appointed artist in residence by Scottish Canals and has spent the last couple of years painting landscapes featuring canals. Lesley will paint one of her canal scenes for us.

Some of you may remember Fraser’s visit to our club a few years ago. His demonstration on portraiture was very well received so we thought we would ask him to do another one for us this September. Fraser is an Art and Design teacher at St Luke’s High in Barrhead. He plans to use graphite pencils, sticks and graphite powder in his demonstration.

Favourite Painting

 

The favourite painting, voted by the public as well as club members, was won by Beth Alexander for her painting titled ‘Pals’.

Ida presented Beth with her prize of a beautiful plant at the club last Thursday.

Exhibition

Our Exhibition was a great success. It was a bonus that the lovely weather brought many visitors to Greenbank Gardens and then to the Coach House to look round our exhibition. We sold 16 paintings in all and several little ones on small easels. Congratulations to all those who sold paintings.

A huge thank you to all our wonderful art club members who gave of their time in preparing, hanging and manning the exhibition. We could not have done it without your help. Many thanks to Janet Forry for sharing her expertise and professional knowledge in hanging the paintings. A big thank you to James for his time and skill in designing the posters, invitations and flyers, also to Suzanne for organising the delivery and framing of the small paintings as well giving extra help when It was needed.

Art Demonstration

William Dobbie - Landscape in Oils

We welcome William Dobbie to the club next Thursday. Wiilliam was born in Glasgow and is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art. Living in Glasgow, ships and the Clyde had a special fascination for him and so he began his series of maritime paintings. His success in these followed with an offer to be the official artist to the Tall Ships race in 1999 and 2011. Landscapes, townscapes and portraits also interest him. As we have not had a landscape demonstration this year, we have asked William to paint a landscape in oils. For more information : williamdobbieart.com

It is time again for our annual tour of the art works at Kelvingrove. Our guide, this year, will be Linda Whyte who plans to show us paintings that are her personal favourites. We meet at 11am at the Information Desk in the main hall. If you would like to join us please phone Anne or Ida whose contact numbers are on the e-mail sent to you by Glenda. Our tour will start at 11.15am and will last 1 -1.5 hours. Car parking is available and costs £1 for 4 hours.

Peter Nardini - Scene with Figures in Acrylics

 

Peter came to our club a few years ago and was the members’ popular choice to return and give another painting demonstration this year. He has a particular interest and skill in figurative art and was commissioned to do a painting for Scottish Ballet. This painting, 'Rehearsal' is on permanent display in the foyer of the Theatre Royal. Peter likes to work with acrylic paint using a dry brush. This gives a paste like quality to his work. He plans to paint a scene with figures, using acrylics.

Thomas Cameron - Built Environment in Oils

Thomas graduated from Duncan of  Jordanstone College of Art and now lives in Glasgow. He likes to work with images of the seemingly ordinary, places and situations that are often overlooked due to their familiarity. He is especially interested in the quick snapshot of a subject compared to the slower process of painting it in oils. Nature and the built environment are favourite subjects for his art work. Thomas will demonstrate for us the art of painting buildings in oils.

Fiona Wilson - Portrait in Oils

Our first demonstrator, this session, will be Fiona Wilson who specialises in portrait painting as well as figurative work. Fiona also enjoys painting cityscapes and is drawn to the light in the cities which she captures using the medium of oils. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art, Fiona took up various teaching posts in Scotland and the North of England. However on returning to Glasgow, she discovered the Glasgow Print Studio and her love of painting was reborn. As a child she had always enjoyed sketching something or someone. For some reason, the human face, with its individual characteristics was something she felt compelled to capture. Because of the success of her figurative and portrait paintings, Fiona is regularly commissioned to paint portraits. She will paint a portrait in oils for us. William was born in Glasgow, a city famous for its shipbuilding. Here he  found a love and inspiration in its maritime heritage. After graduating from Glasgow School of Art, the sea was often the subject of his paintings. William was the official Artist to the Tall Ships' visits In 1999 and 2011. He prefers to paint in oils and watercolour. As well as seascapes he enjoys painting landscapes and will paint a landscape in oils for our demonstration.

Eastwood Artists Art Exhibition 2017

Congratulations to all those members who sold paintings at our recent exhibition.

Eleven paintings were sold as well as three unframed paintings.

Many thanks to all our members who helped out at the hanging of the exhibition, the Preview night and at the Sales Desk over the weekend. A special thanks to Douglas for his sterling work in hanging the paintings. A big thank you also to James who designed all the posters, flyers and invitations.

Maggie is a figurative artist who works mostly as an illustrator of books for children. Her visit to our club will comprise of a an hour demonstrating the art of illustration and a further hour showing us examples of her work followed by a question and answer session.

Our annual competition will take place this year on Thursday 16th March.

Please bring along your completed unsigned painting (in the white envelope provided) for the secret vote. After the Competition, the small paintings will be displayed at our exhibition in May.

Robert Andrew has offered to frame them again for £9 in time for our exhibition.

 

This is our auction night so please look out any unwanted art materials or saleable items you may have at home. Home baking always welcome! All proceeds will go to the Art Club.

Joe is the Vice President of the Paisley Art Institute as well as a member of the Southern Art Club. His inspiration comes from the Colourists. As Joe enjoys painting European landscapes and townscapes, we have asked Joe to demonstrate one of his Italian street scenes for us.

Janet Forry September 22nd
Janet  Forry has had connections with our club for many years. She is President of the Southern Art Club as well as a local professional artist. Janet is also a successful art tutor and is well known to most of our club members, many of whom attend her classes. Some years ago, Janet did a portrait demonstration for us. James Orr November 3rd

A few years ago, James Orr's demonstration was very well received by the club members. We have asked him to come back to the club in November to paint a landscape in acrylics. James is based in Troon and you can see his wonderful seascapes and landscapes on the website :  jamesorrartist.com

 

 

Joe Broadley February 2nd

Joe Broadley is Vice President of The Paisley Art Institute and exhibits widely. He gets his inspiration from the paintings of the Impressionists and the Colourists. Landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes are his preferred subjects. Joe also enjoys working with the light and colour of European locations. Maggie Downer March 30th

Now for something a little different. We have asked Maggie Downer, a figurative artist, to show us her technique in figurative art. Her demonstration at the end of March will be based on Glasgow characters. She works in mixed media.

A final thank you to all our members who helped to make our exhibition and the 30th anniversary celebrations such a success. As Ida said in her speech, ''You are the club.'' and this was very evident in the willingness, cooperation and good humour of all those who took part.

A special thanks to James for sharing his professional skills in designing all the posters, flyers, invitations and mugs as well as our logo which features at the top of each of our web pages.

Also thanks to Douglas and Richard for providing and using their platform ladders to facilitate the hanging and taking down of  the exhibition.
